Snow-covered rocks

Snow covered boulders glisten in late evening sun. Winter light on fresh snow, along the frozen Kennicott River, or Kennecott River, Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve, Alaska.

A thick dry layer of fresh snow on the boulders beside the Kennicott River

One afternoon I skied down the Kennicott River valley, enjoying the quiet, the stillness, and the beauty of the place. It’s amazing in the winter. The transformation the place undergoes from season to season is so stark, so dramatic, it catches me every time. Each tiny locale becomes an entirely new place. The beauty is different day to day, and hour to hour. I can’t fully explain it. But if you’ve ever seen the Kennicott River in summer time, and then see this image, you’ll maybe get the tiniest sense of the experience.
